Dallas & Ax

I love this series but this book didn't feel like the same series. I was really looking forward to Dallas and Ax's story. There were parts I gad to go back and re-read because I thought I missed something. One minute Ax and Dallas are only having another weekend fling and then Ax is referring to her as his girlfriend. What was the point of Ax and Gabriella performing together that last time? Ok, I know I'm probably in the minority here but I have to say it. The whole "Emmie is so wonderful. Emmie can get anything done and fast. Everyone loves Emmie so much that she is their go to for everything. Emmie is so great everyone feels the need to tell her they love her all the time" is getting old an definitey has run its course for me. I will say I enjoyed the break from all the "Oh my gods". AND must Ax always be referred to as the "rock god" almost every time Dallas thinks about him. Gabriella the "little Italian rocker" everytime she was thought of or talked about. And don't even get me started on Shane always being referred to as a man whore. Come on, give the guy a break. He's not that guy anymore. I found myelf rolling my eyes more with this one. BUT I will be reading the next one.

MANY MORE THAN FIVE STARS!!

When I love an author and all her books as much as I love Terri Anne Browning and her Rockers series, I actually find it harder to write a review. I am so in love with these characters and their stories, it’s as if they are family to me. The Demons Wings rockers are so amazing, and I just knew that Terri Anne Browning could keep it going with the hot band members of OtherWorld.

TRWWM is Axton’s story. We’ve already met these rockers and girls, as their lives are intertwined with those of the Demons. Now it’s time for their stories to be told and Axton and Dallas are the perfect way to start. Their story is one filled with emotion and made me fall in love with Axton harder than I ever thought I would. I could not put down my Kindle I had to read straight through and lost sleep doing so. Now that’s a sign of a truly great read! And Dallas – I love her character and felt like I was right there beside her through everything she experienced. I do feel I should mention that, like all the previous books in this series, there is plenty of HOTNESS so be prepared for some truly amazingly steamy scenes.

Terri Anne Browning has a way of bringing her characters to life in such a way that you just do not want their stories to end. The emotion pours through the pages and you experience all of it on the way to an HEA that just makes you smile. I love each and every one of her books and her characters and fall in love with this series more and more each time a new story is told. I do suggest starting at Book 1 if you haven’t yet read the Rockers series and read them in order to fully enjoy every moment. Thank you Terri Anne Browning for giving us Ax’s story; I cannot wait for the next one!

This is SUCH A GREAT BOOK! Axton and Dallas' story is not only hot, but it's beautiful to read and was beautifully written! Terri Anne has knocked it out of the park again and did a wonderful job leading into the stories of the members of OtherWorld after wrapping up the stories of the Demon's Wings members.

Axton has loved Dallas since he first saw her but has never been able to say those words out loud. After falsely believing he was in love with his best friend and being in a toxic relationship with a rocker chick, Axton knows he's found the love of his life in Dallas and wants her forever...if he can get out of his own way.

Dallas Bradshaw had lived a lonely life, having been forced into pageants and a modeling career by her viscous mother, until she finally broke free and went after her dreams of becoming a nurse. She separated herself from the life her mother tried to force her into by getting tattoos, walking away from a lucrative modeling career, and going to college in New York City with her best friends Harper, Lana, and Linc. When she meets Axton Cage for the first time, she is not impressed at all. Yet somehow, she falls under his spell (despite trying her hardest to fight his charms) and falls in love with him, all the while believing that he is in love with someone else.

Will they finally get on the same page and give into the one thing they both want...each other?

This book is FANTASTIC and I very highly recommend it to not just all Terri Anne Browning fans, but to anyone that loves a steamy read! FIVE MEGA STARS!!!

It proved a difficult task, and his editor rewrote large chunks of it, eventually publishing the substantially altered book under a different title. Now Grey’s original version is published, in all its sprawling glory. Viewed simply as a novel, it feels clunky and unpolished, although the story—the construction of a railroad and how it affects the lives of the novel’s characters—has a Michener-style grandeur to it, both in its mixture of history and fiction and in its use of individual characters to represent sections of society. Viewed, on the other hand, as a glimpse into the mind of Zane Grey, as a look at the big novel he dreamed of publishing but never really did, it’s downright fascinating. About the Author
Zane Grey was born Pearl Zane Gray in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1872. He took his first trip to Arizona in 1907 and, following his return, wrote and published his first western, The Heritage of the Desert. One of the most famous Western authors of his time, Grey fashioned psycho-dramas about the odyssey of the human soul. More than 109 films have been based on his work, a record that remains unbroken. He died in 1939.

Building a Railroad Zane Grey's Way

What can one say about the greatest undertaking ever devised by man--the construction of the transcontinental railroad in the 1860's--and its exposition in story form by the greatest writer of the American West, Zane Grey. Historically accurate from beginning to end, descriptively unmatched by any other writer, and filled with characters enough to fill a mini-series. Of course, there is love found and love lost and then found again; it wouldn't be Zane Grey without that! But beyond the romance, the reader will find the heroism, the strength, the men and women with the kind of fortitude and vision that it took to make this country what it is today. And yes, there is a tragic side to the book. The passing of a life-style; the passing of a people--the Indian; for the progress of the railroad with its technology and its ability to bring huge numbers of people into the country meant the destruction of the Indian. I would recommend this book whole-heartedly for anyone--historian, or pleasure reader.

It bronzes solid, long suffering characters and shows pity to those who try to survive with a few dollars and a riotous, dangerous passing through uncharted terrain.Watch wealthy cattle barrens and ruthless attorneys set traps for those who pound the railways and the courageous shop owners who ride the waves of poverty and plenty, death and destruction.Grey's voice is clear and resolute, carving out characters that you can feel breath, moan and die.While the subject may be old to some the writing is gut wrenching genius.

Entertaining and historicl read

I like Zane Grey and have read many of his books and watched the movies made from his stories. What I resented was the Forward which I felt was demeaning. I suspect many authors have editors and others that clean up what may be conceived as lacking to the final manuscript.
Having said that, the book was full of great characters and railroad history. It could have been shorter, then again, how often do we wish a story would not end quickly. The story illustrates the changing of America and the extreme difficulty, the corruption, the life in work camps and the morals, or lack of in vivid detail.

We see his fear, his courage, and his sometimes childish, sometimes wise thoughts about war, his family, and his beloved elephant. His devotion to his elephant runs throughout the story, and his faith in his future with her despite the horrific things happening around him is beautiful and sad in it's child-like naivete.

This is a sometimes graphic, brutal story that is best suited for middle school and above. The images of a mass grave and ruthless murder as seen through the eyes of a child are vividly portrayed. Y'Tin's struggle with the realization that the American's were not coming back to help his village was hard for me to read. This is a part of the Vietnam story that I had conveniently forgotten about, so I am very glad that the author is helping to keep it alive for the next generation. I hope teachers latch on to this book as I truly think it could be very effective while teaching about the Vietnam war period.

Other reviewers have commented on the child like writing style as being a draw back to the book's appeal to teens. I feel that any teen who picks this up will be drawn in by it. The style of writing is an integral part of Y'Tin's character and helps to serve as a counterpoint to the horrific events of the book. My congratulations to the author for once again producing such an important novel that will have lasting impact. A solid choice for teens age 12 and up, as well as any adult fan of historical fiction. The author's end notes add much to the story and will only serve to open up even more discussion.

Kadohata...vividly brings immediacy to a conflict that too many people have forgotten about or never really knew

For many Americans, no matter their age, the Vietnam War has receded into distant memory or even the realm of myth. Outside of the iconic Vietnam Veterans Memorial and dwindling accounts in films and books, this 1960s and '70s-era war has been subsumed by more recent conflicts.

Even for Americans who remember the war, their knowledge of it probably ceases at the point when the U.S. troops withdrew from what seemed an increasingly hopeless and unpopular situation. But what happened to the South Vietnamese people who were left behind when the Americans withdrew to cut their own losses? Cynthia Kadohata explores this devastating question in A MILLION SHADES OF GRAY.

Thirteen-year-old Y'Tin has one passion: elephants. Y'Tin is an expert elephant trainer, the youngest handler in his village. He is not so enthusiastic about school, though --- he would rather spend his energies training his beloved elephant, Lady, with whom he has a close, intuitive relationship, without the violence and mistrust that characterizes some other handlers' treatment of their animals. Y'Tin's goal is to open his own school someday --- an elephant training school, that is, the first of its kind in Vietnam.

But history might have its own plans for Y'Tin. His Dega tribe has long had a relationship with the American troops fighting the North Vietnamese --- many men like Y'Tin's own father have assisted the American Special Forces in exchange for a promise that the Americans will always defend the Dega if the North Vietnamese break their treaty agreement and attack these mountain-dwelling South Vietnamese people.

In the wake of the American withdrawal, however, the U.S. troops seem to have forgotten about their promise to the Dega. And when the North Vietnamese attack Y'Tin's home, nearly half of the villagers are killed, and many others --- including Y'Tin --- are captured, forced to perform manual labor (including digging mass graves) at penalty of death.

In Cynthia Kadohata's well-researched coming-of-age story, Y'Tin matures from an impetuous boy into a less trusting, more cautious, but still goal-oriented young man. At the end of the novel, his future is not quite what he had imagined, but he is still able to find hope despite the horrific things he has seen and done. Kadohata pulls no punches in her depiction of war. In her compassionate portrayal of Y'Tin and his people, she vividly brings immediacy to a conflict that too many people have forgotten about or never really knew.

Not enjoyable, so-so writing, lot of potential but missed the mark

This is the story of a young teenage boy name T'Yin who is the youngest elephant trainer in his village in the Vietnam jungle. American troops have withdrawn from the Vietnam War, and T'Yin's village, from which many of the men helped the American Special Forces, is now vulnerable to attack from the North Vietnamese. T'Yin ends up fleeing into the jungle with his elephant, and has to decide whether to stay and resist or establish a new life elsewhere.

This book had a lot of potential, but unfortunately, I did not find it to be very engaging. I enjoyed the first 30 pages of this book, introducing T'Yin and his elephant, Lady, but it was downhill from there. The elephant became rather peripheral to the storyline, there, but not very important, and I think that would be one of the main appeals for many readers. Lady also didn't really come to life and didn't seem to have much personality to her.

I felt the story, as short as it is, just seemed to drag on, and the writing was so dry and matter-of-fact and held me at a distance. T'Yin was held captive, and running through the jungle, and bickering with older boys, and making major life decisions, and I cared more about getting through the book than about what happened to his character. I also felt the writing was a bit abrupt at times. T'Yin has an exceedingly convenient reunion with his elephant; she appears unexpectedly out of nowhere at a key moment. And, the ending of the story seemed rather abrupt to me. All of a sudden, T'Yin comes to his monumental decision and has his strong feeling of security in what the future holds (for no apparent reason), and the book is over.

Finally, I also didn't like the fact that T'Yin sees the soul of a dead young man twice, and not in a dream sequence or anything like that, but in broad daylight matter-of-factly like it really happened.

I think a book for young people aimed at this time period from the side of the Vietnamese is a wonderful idea, but I do not feel this book lived up to its potential. It's main fault is that it does not do well drawing the reader in and the reader ends up at an emotional remove.

Sometimes you just have to accept it when fate decides to place the woman or man of your dreams in your path. It may not be when you expect it or the person you might have expected, but when it does happen you should maybe just go with the flow.
When it comes to Georgia she just can't cope with any kind of unexpected flow. She likes to know where she is going and have all situations under control, so she is like a wet kipper caught on dry land when she ends up at a dodgy escort party, which is supposed to be a singles extravaganza.

Nearly everyone will learn something from this book

I've been repairing and building things my whole life and thought a had a pretty decent grasp of the most common tools and how to use. I bought this book because I thought it would be a fun bathroom bath.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of things I've learned. I've learned a better way to use some of the tools I own and understand the capability of tools I've never touched. Topics include rules, squares, plumb bobs and levels, dividers and calipers, scribers, punches, jigs and guides, benches and vises, clamps, sharpening tools, saws, chisels and gouges, planes, routers, spokeshaves, scrapers, knives, staple gun, hammmers and mallets, modeling tools, pincers and pliers, auger and gimlet, braces and drills, lathe, screwdrivers, sanders and abrasives, lubricating equipment, battery testing equipment, rasps and files, snips and shears, wrenches, taps and dies, plumbing tools, welding tools, needles, brushes rollers and paint sprayer, ladders, building tools, axes and hatchets, adze hooks and scythe, digging tools, protective clothing.

This isn't an in depth reference work. However, it is an enjoyable and enlightening book that many folks who take pride in repairing and building will enjoy.

Lovely!

My Dad gave me this book when I was growing up. I am now a Carpenter and still have the copy he gave me. I think it is wonderful book and I often refer to it if I need an answer about a tool in my kit. It is such a lovely book to just browse through because the illustrations are great and the text very informative. I have a biast opinion yes! but I would not do without it in my reference library.

This publication is a great source of information to me as a shop teacher trying to arouse young students' interest in tools. In one book, the author relays the history of most of the common hand tools in use in carpentry and associated trades today. In addition, he gives detailed instructions as to the use of each tool and provides flawless illustrations to guide the reader.
I would recommend this book as a gift for a hobbyist, shop teacher, contractor or any persons with similar interest areas. I plan to award a volume to my top shop student each year.\

A great book

I beg to disagree with the other reviewer. I am a complete newcomer to ritual studies and this book is every novice's dream. Both detailed and wide-ranging, it gives sufficient exposure to the key questions to start using ritual in your own work, or to simply appreciate the pervasiveness of ritual in social life.

The book is divided into three parts: Part one summarizes various theories of ritual from the mid 19th century to the present while discussing key aspects of ritual. Frazer, Durkheim, Levi-Strauss, Van Gennep, Douglas, Turner are some of the many key figures presented. Part two examines types of ritual, while Part three explores "the broader relationships between ritual activities and social life." A wealth of examples and brief case studies complete this extraordinary volume.

The coverage and precision of this book are outstanding but I was most impressed by the objectivity and fairness with which Bell presents thinkers and positions now dated. If you are looking for a single volume introduction to ritual look no further.

Plumbs the depths and spans the breadth of a complex topic

Catherine Bell is certainly one of the preeminent scholars of ritual studies. This book is a fantastic demonstration of why that is the case. It's a tour de force of scholarship and quite a tour of the vast territory covered by the term "ritual" as well. Ritual is one of those words (like "religion" itself) that we all think we can define easily until we're actually asked to do it. Bell gets around the problem of slippery and ethnocentric definitions of ritual by encompassing a wide range of activities she calls "ritualization." This strategic shift from noun to verb brings ritual out of the dusty display cabinet of pinned-down "things" and into the dynamic and contested realm of ongoing human activity. She sees the doing of "ritual" and "ritual-like" activities as well as the interpretation of those activities as acts of ritualization. A bit post-modern? Yes. If this discursive approach to understanding human behavior turns you off, then this isn't the book for you. If you're looking for a sweeping introduction to the field of ritual studies from a scholar at the top of her game who has an impressive command of work in that field and in many related ones besides, then this is a tasty treat indeed.

Larger than life

Captivating.
Remember sitting on a grandparent's lap, and being transported to another place and time because they were such a good storyteller? Well, its been a while since I was a kid and listened to a story. And in this day and age, when you can google, youtube and DVR just about anything, it takes a special voice to bring magic into your head and rekindle old tales with new fire.
Sharma's translation and Chakrabarti's narration are INCREDIBLE!!! It is hard to believe that one person can generate the voices of the dying King Dasharath in the cauldron of his grief, the thunderous voice of Ravana coming from all ten of his hideous heads, the shrill shrieking of Soorpanaka, and the soothing majesterial voice of Ram. It is awesome to hear.
I purchased this audiobook for my children -- and they listen to it spellbound as we drive around. We pull into the driveway, and no one wants to get out of the car, because the story and the narration are that good!!
Yes, I bought this for my kids...but I too listen with rapt attention and feel like a kid again.
Highly, highly recommended!
