About the Author
Stacy L. Mallicoat is a professor of criminal justice in the Division of Politics, Administration and Justice at California State University, Fullerton. She earned her BA in Legal Studies and Sociology, with a concentration in Crime and Deviance from Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma, WA) in 1997 and received her PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Sociology in 2003. Her primary research interests include feminist criminology and public opinion on the death penalty. She is the author of several books, including Women and Crime: The Essentials, Criminal Justice Policy, and California’s Criminal Justice System. Her work also appears in a number of journals such as Feminist Criminology, Journal of Criminal Justice, Journal of Ethnicity and Criminal Justice, and Southwestern Journal of Criminal Justice, as well as a number of edited volumes. She is an active member of the American Society of Criminology, the ASC’s Division on Women and Crime (where she currently serves as an Executive Counselor), Western Society of Criminology, and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

About the Author
Carolyn Sparey Fox is a professional musician based in the United Kingdom. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and was latterly principal viola with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. She is also a commissioned composer. Amongst musicians she has worked with are the violinist Sir Yehudi Menuhin and the conductor Sir Simon Rattle, and she performed for the first London production of Jesus Christ Superstar. The Half of It Was Never Told is her first published book.

The Search for Prophecies Come True

I've just finished reading this book THE HALF OF IT WAS NEVER TOLD. I
can do no better than to echo the blurb on the back of the book which says
'A rip-roaring read!' It continues ... 'As the 19th century began,
religious people of all persuasions drew strength from the writings of their
Faiths, such as the Bible and the Qur'án. But there was another aspect of
these ancient Books which had preoccupied and intrigued people for
millennia: the prophecies. These promised not only a time of renewal, but
also the appearance of a redemptive figure who would enable that renewal to
flourish; and those studying them believed that the time was close, very
close.'

The 3 men featured in this book lived on 3 different continents ... William
Miller in North America, Joseph Wolff in Europe, and Mullá Husayn in the
Middle East (Asia) ... and only one of them found what he was looking for.

I knew a little about William Miller and the Adventists, regrettably I had
not heard before of Joseph Wolff, and I had read the book "The
Dawn-breakers" so knew a fair bit about Mullá Husayn. The author very cleverly
and successfully has brought together these 3 fascinating lives, written
about their travels, their misfortunes, their eagerness to find The Promised
One (referred to as 'the Second Coming'), and taken it forward to its
conclusion.

I was held spell-bound wondering how it would all end. Was the expectation
of the Adventists in vain? Was there any relationship between the Christian
prophecies and those of Islam which focus on the year 1260 in their own
calendar, which in the Gregorian calendar is the year 1844?

Read the book and find out!

Basketball mom says "winning coaching"

It is clear that Jim Burson knows a great deal about basketball and about motivating people. My son played high school basketball while I read this book and the book helped me to be a more understanding parent. I think I gained empathy for the complex plight of a coach as well as players, and I certainly saw myself in some of the mothers the author describes throughout the story. It helped me to realize that every coach is on a journey of their own and that, while I may want them to be perfectly together for my son, we all are learning as we go. The Golden Whistle made me want to be a better mother, not just a better basketball mom. For me, that felt like winning coaching.

The education of the heart is the heart of education

I have spent a coaching lifetime in southern Ohio and have grown professionally watching Coach Burson's Muskingum College teams, listening to him at coaching clinics, observing his practices and seeking his counsel for over 40 years. I anxiously awaited the release of this book, and have not been disappointed. Dr. Burson's story, uniquely written, presents deep questions of beginning and experienced coaches alike in the formation of core values that will maximize a coach's influence on student-athletes. However, this book cuts to the heart issues of a coach, challenges him to see and do the right things for the right reasons, and grow personally as well as professionally from the experience of truly pursuing excellence. In a "style over substance" culture, this book has weighty subject matter for thought and reflection. I always recommend three "must read" books to basketball coaches serious about the profession: "They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden, "A Season With Dick Bennett" by Eric Ferris, and "The Score Takes Care of Itself" by Bill Walsh. This book must be added to the list. "The Golden Whistle" is a gift to the coaching profession.

Deeper than you might expect, more than just basketball.

I'm not a book reader, mostly because I don't have time, so any book I read has to have at least one takeaway thought that sticks with me for a while and goes beyond what I would have expected from the book. This book certainly has it from first-time author Jim Burson. If you are a Basketball coach - I think it's a must read. If you a sports coach - it's a must read. But I think if you look past the fact this has a basketball/sports theme, this book has some great nuggets that will make you think about the way that you prepare to teach and to be taught throughout life.

The book is based on fictional characters and tells the story of basketball knowledge being passed from a legendary coach entering retirement to his successor, a bright young apprentice who has encountered struggles early in his career. I suspect many of the experiences, characters, and lessons are based on real people or knowledge from the Author. The set up was well done and the story moves efficiently into the heart and purpose of the book. There are a number of great takeaways that I will leave for the reader, but by far the theme that stuck with me as I finished the book was how to prepare your own life so that you can always be ready to accept knowledge from others, adapt it so that it becomes your own unique knowledge, and then share it to others when they are ready to be coached. There is an emphasis in the story about creating your own unique plan by using the knowledge of others, and those that do this effectively will experience the greatest success in life.

This may sound a bit deep for a book about basketball, but I suspect the message was not designed to be limited to the game. Of course, there are a number of great, basketball specific philosophical coaching ideas to chew on, and so the book is worth the read to get at those nuggets. But by far the highest level takeaway goes beyond the game and brings the reader to a satisfying end that transcends basketball.

For a first-time author, Dr. Burson did an amazing job. There were a few times in the book that became too basketball specific, but those were easily skimmed to get back to the theme that grabbed my focus. For the price, reading efficiency, and for providing that takeaway value you want from any book, this delivers.

About the Author
James Proctor has travelled widely across the entire Nordic region and has lived in several of the Nordic Countries, most notably in Sweden where he worked as the BBC's Scandinavia Correspondent during the mid-90s. He speaks fluent Swedish and consequently is conversant in Norwegian and Danish. James now divides his time as a freelance writer between his native Yorkshire, the south of France and his log cabin in the Swedish forest. He has written a total of six guidebooks and contributed to many more.

A highly-indented coastline of barren, tundra fells backed by monumental fjords, towering snow-capped mountains and rocky, windswept islands, makes Norwegian Lapland one of the most scenically rewarding places to travel in the whole of Europe. Quite unlike the densely forested heartlands of Swedish and Finnish Lapland where spruce and pine trees dominate the landscape, these coastal lands at the top of Europe, buffeted by the Arctic winds, are either completely void of trees or slavishly support a few dwarf species that have become specially adapted to the ferocious climate. It’s a place where snow storms and blizzards sweeping in off the Arctic Ocean can persist for days during the long, dark winter, yet equally a land of exquisite beauty in spring and summer when the delicate flowers of the Arctic burst forth, profiting from the relentless 24hr daylight of the Midnight Sun. The unforgiving geography of Norwegian Lapland is at its most awe-inspiring in the west, where the mountain chain reaches dizzying heights of 1700m. Further east, the landscapes become less agitated, slowly falling away, to be replaced with plateaux of grey, weather-beaten rocks which slip effortlessly into the steely waters of the Arctic Ocean.

Not very extensive

I was excited to get this book a couple months before my vacation to Finnish Lapland. However I'm a bit underwhelmed. First I noticed a small mistake: they list the airport code to Kittilä as KTL, but it's actually KTT. That's not a big deal. But then was disappointed to find that they don't even mention the area I'm going to visit. Ylläs is the largest ski area in Finland in terms of number of ski runs/slopes and lifts. There is no mention of it at all is this book. It's in between 2 villages: Ylläsjärvi and Äkäslompolo, both of which have local tour guides offering husky, reindeer and snowmobile safaris. No mention of these towns or tour operators either. They do mention Levi, which has the largest ski village and more amenities than Ylläs. There's probably a lot of good info in this book, but if you're going to Finnish Lapland, I think you'd be better off buying the Lonely Planet Finland guide.

The best guide we could find for visiting Northern Sweden and Norway

Of the three books we bought for our trip to Northern Sweden and Norway in January to see the Aurora Borealis, this was the best. The others were more general and had very little information on this zone.
