About the Author
Fiona Westwood qualified as a solicitor in 1976 and practised for more than 20 years as a commercial lawyer. Since 2000, she has been involved in post-graduate vocational skills development where her particular areas of research, business and academic publications relate to practice leadership and management, professionalism and the development of professional judgement. In addition to running her own management consultancy, Westwood Associates, she is the Director of Continuing Professional Education, the School of Law, the University of Glasgow. Karen Barton has had a long-term interest in teaching and learning; e-learning; professional learning and the use of IT within legal practice, and as a result, has published widely and carried out a number of funded research projects in these areas. She has led a number of innovative teaching and learning projects involving transactional, web-based simulations as well as multimedia and webcast environments and is currently the Head of UH Online, the University of Hertfordshire’s Centre for Online Distance Learning. The editors have collaborated and published successfully together since 2004.

IS LAW A CALLING? READ THIS BOOK AND BANISH ALL DOUBT

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

This book reminds lawyers that the law, which they have chosen as a career, is a calling as well as a profession and as such is imbued with a moral dimension, which they can ignore only at their peril. They -- as well as any reader interested in the law -- will therefore be concerned with the multiplicity of issues covering legal education; in particular its future as well as its present and its past.

Under the able editorship of Fiona Westwood and Karen Barton, this book, a recent publication from Ashgate, brings together in one convenient volume the commentary and insight of no less than fifteen international contributors whose expertise in professional education encompasses medicine as well as law.

The legal jurisdictions covered include the United Kingdom, the USA, Canada Australia and Hong Kong – all common law and all committed to producing effective practitioners, with ideally, a sense of calling to their chosen profession. ‘A sense of calling’-- and all it implies, is particularly important, says Karen Barton, in the wake of the far-reaching changes brought about by the Clementi Report (2004) and subsequently the Legal Services Act in England (2007) and in Scotland (2010).

The book stresses the necessity of encouraging budding lawyers to place their moral and intellectual emphasis on, as the editors suggest, ‘culture over industry, character over eloquence and calling over skills.’

Some readers might regard all this as an achievable ideal; others may not. Still others may argue that lawyers, especially those aiming for distinction in their professional lives, should strive to exemplify all these attributes at once.

Of particular interest is the article by Donald Nicholson which examines in detail the concept of the ‘clinical LLB’ which, in addition to the standard LLB curriculum, also puts special emphasis on issues relating to professionalism, ethics and justice.

The aim here is to promote a spirit of what is referred to as, ‘altru-ethical professionalism’ among nascent lawyers. The term has a number of connotations and applications, but basically it means subordinating self-interest to the interests of client and community.

Among the book’s many useful features is the extensive bibliography which follows each of the ten chapters. There is an amazingly rich reservoir here, of references for further research in this area of legal scholarship, which has become increasingly central and pivotal in legal education on both sides of the Atlantic.

Practitioners and legal educators alike will certainly value this book as a catalyst for detailed and informed discussion on the future of vocational legal education. However controversial it may seem in some respects, this is a thought-provoking, as well an inspiring read.

Perfectly written and thought-provoking

In this short book Lynch gently swings back and forth acknowledging the good and the bad that new communication technologies bring.
His writing is thought-provoking and in many ways is akin to an easily read literary review that has wet my appetite for many of the writers he quotes.
I would put this as must read for those wondering whether technology is good or bad and enjoy Lynch's ability to take us beyond or above the easy, polarised answers of that discussion.

The 2013 reprint is of poorer quality

The 2013 reprint is of poorer quality, printed in South Korea whilst the prior was printed in Japan. The photos are darker & more grainy & so its harder to see smaller detail like hand positions.
Excellent book, unfortunately the publishers have not done it justice.

Brilliant!!

Just what you would come to expect from one of the all time greats in Japanese Shotokan karate, a large (hard back) 240 page book packed with hundreds of small black & white detailed photos & explanations of all the 26 kata in the Shotokan canon.

Each move & many of the intermediate moves are explained in full detail under the pictures.

One nice little surprise for ALL Shotokan Karate-ka is a new (for me anyway - it's actually very old) kata called Koryu Gankaku or (Gankaku-Sho).

Each of the katas movements are highlighted with easy to read symbols to help you with speed, breathing & kime etc.

Bunkai (application of kata) is shown at the end of each kata as well as a glossary of karate terms.

Quite simply a great book to complete Kanazawa Sensei's bookshelf of books including: Black Belt Karate, Karate Fighting Techniques: The Complete Kumite, Karate My Life

At least in this book you may find all the Shotokan Kata in one place, whereas before you had to buy two books which are now becoming quite hard to get a hold of: Shotokan Karate International Kata: Volume 1 & Shotokan Karate International Kata: Volume 2

Great resource, but wait for the reprint.

I've used this book at the dojo where my family trains, and was looking to purchase a copy for home. This is a wonderful resource for Shotokan karateka, but the current prices listed by third party sellers here are extortion. The most recent printing appears to be sold out nearly everywhere, so if you absolutely, positively must have this book right now, you may be stuck with these ridiculous prices. However, I contacted the publisher about it because it is still listed on their website as a current product, and was told that a new printing has been authorized and is in the works. So, if you can be patient, you should be able to buy a copy in the near future for the list price.

Needs more grouse hunting techniques

About the only thing I found useful was the ruffed grouse population density map. You might be able to find that online for free. This book is mostly listings of hotels, veterinarians and other services that you can find perfectly well with Googlemaps. Not much in the way of hunting technique or types of cover to look for which I needed. I am a first time Minnesota ruffed grouse hunter, and I found the book to be insufficient.

A wonderful find

I was intrigued about this book because H.Rider Haggard mentions it many times in his various books. It turns out it was a favorite of Sir Walter Scott's, and Rudyard Kipling too. I figured with all that going for it, how could it be bad? I was and am delighted with it--it will have you chuckling a lot and laughing out loud many times. Caution; a great deal of it is in verse form, which I normally avoid, but this is such GREAT satire (some are serious in a kind of odd way) that I delighted in nearly every word.

This books was not properly formatted for Kindle. Line breaks are not properly placed in any font size. There are many obvious errors in the text, which show a lack of proofreading after conversion to electronic form.There is not a linked Table of Contents. Though not mentioned in the description, it contains a fairly large biography of the author.

The stories are excellent, but this volume is very poor. I would suggest not buying this version. Find one that is constructed so that it may be enjoyed in full on your Kindle.

Neglected gems

According to Wikipedia, The Ingoldsby Legends is a collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry written supposedly by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor, actually a pen-name of an English clergyman named Richard Harris Barham. There are approximately 75 short stories and verses. The fictitious author, Ingoldsby, usually inserts one of his relations into the stories, often in a supporting role. Written in the middle of the 19th Century, it is full of archaic words, such as horologe, mickle, quincy, and grimalkin, for which I am thankful for the Kindle on-line dictionary. The prose portions, though a distinct minority, were witty and enjoyable. Personally, I have never acquired an appreciation of poetry and verse, so my review is less because of it. I think this an excellent example of the period literature.

A glimpse into the cultural foundation of Japan

I was completely charmed by this beautifully written autobiography! I couldn't put it down! Not only did I learn some rich social history of Japan, but I was able to see into the Japanese heart for the first time. Although many of the customs mentioned are now outdated, they show the foundation that shaped and molded the Japanese people of today. I can now say that I have a much clearer understanding of the Japanese. Apart from what I learned of Japan, I also got a glimpse of America and how we haven't changed much over the years in our attitudes. I saw into the heart of the immigrant and the adjustments and readjustments they must face. I was awed and inspired!

A Charming and Informative Book!

Unfortunately, out of print - but seek it out any way you can. A fascinating, wonderful, and truthful account of the life of a daughter of the Samurai class, which had existed for centuries, just at the time when it was beginning its decline. Much of what you read in this book will explain the behaviour of modern-day Japanese. As an American living in Japan, that has proved invaluable. The book is well-written, focused, imaginative, whimsical, and resourceful, just like the author herself. If you can get your hands on a copy, be prepared to fall in love with Etsu-bo!

Charming book, beautifully written, I wanted it to continue.

I didn't want this book to finish so soon. I loved the style and became involved in the characters. I want to know how her children re-adjusted back to life in the USA - how did she manage as a single Japanese mother alone in the USA.
Nothing tumultuos happens, no sex, no violence - just a peek into the not-so distant past!
Especially interesting for me since I am a Brit who has lived in the USA and now living in Japan.
Can anyone reccomend more books of this calibre?
