Good book for a start....

Let me first start by saying there is no book by any publisher that is going to prepare you 100% for all the minutiae that are the MS exams. I just passed my 70-412 and there were two answer banks (multiple choice of same scenario but asking for different outcomes) straight from the 70-411 (as an example).

These books are very useful for getting you ~85% ready. You will still need hands on, labs (Microsoft Virtual Academy), technet, practice tests, forums etc....

Also MS currently released, for $200, an exam pack that gives you 4 cracks at the exam. Spend another $50 over the normal exam price. Take your exam, hope you pass the first time. BUT if you don't here is how I go about it:

My first time taking any exam is with the full knowledge that no matter how much book, technet articles, virtual labs you take there will always be something there that you didn't cover.

I go through the exam, answer what I am confident of, mark for review the items I'm going to go back and take more time on and finally when I'm at the point of being done and I have another 45 minutes I keep cycling through the questions, answer banks of multiple choice, scenario based questions and commit it to short term memory. Soon as I'm out the door I'm on my phone recording my mental notes.

Go study that stuff. Rinse repeat.

Like many other seasoned Windows Server Guys I've specialized. I've never missed a question regarding Storage Spaces, iSCSI, SOFS, Hyper-V, AD Sites, Replication, DFS. I'm solid on GPO's but I try to spend as little time there as possible :-)

I don't do AD RMS, FRS, NAP to name a few. Just not in my wheelhouse and other Dev-Admins handle that.

Then there are items like DC isolation and Managed DNS integration that will never appear on the tests that I have down cold.

Desparately needing a competent editor - many, many errors.

This book was required for a course I took at Pierce College, otherwise I would not have wasted my money on it. For a text that is over two years from original publication date the number of errata is saddening. It is as if the publisher simply merged several different drafts of the text into a final document and then sent it directly to the presses without any proof-reading whatsoever. The text explaining each server role/feature is often muddled and incomplete. The bright-point is that the step-by-step instructions are 99% correct.

Also, based on information provided by the publisher, you would think that purchasing a new copy of this book would include a MOAC Access Code for the online lab portion of the course. IT DOES NOT! The only way to obtain MOAC Access Codes is to purchase them directly from Wiley (or perhaps at your college bookstore).

Unless you need this text for a class, don't waste your money, you'll most likely have better understanding of the concepts and processes by searching the Internet for information.

But when he began to make demands on Britain to discharge its aid commitments to Uganda, the British chose to ridicule him for his 'buffoonery'. He turned instead to Libya for his immediate financial needs, and that was the beginning of both the widening gulf between Britain and Idi Amin, and also the establishment of a new dictator in Africa. He was an uneducated man, but he was deeply cunning and calculating. With his effusive charm and outward affability he was able to disarm his enemies and then catch them unawares. Though he ran his administration with the help of the elite civil servants of the country it was by his animal instincts that he kept himself in power. As internal economic problems grew, he made scapegoats of the Asians of Uganda, blaming them for all the ills of the country. In a masterstroke he succeeded in expelling the Asian community from Uganda in 1972 without any serious repercussions from the West. He wrested away the economy of Uganda from the hands of the Asians and put it into the lap of the Africans of his country, who loved him for this and his other exploits in a way that can only be compared to the way Germans had once loved Hitler.

About the Author
Manzoor Moghal is a well-known writer and commentator in the UK and international news media and a lecturer on a range of subjects, including Uganda, Asians in Britain, race-relations, issues of global terror, the criminal justice system, Islam and Muslim affairs. He was born in Sialkot, Pakistan and grew up in Uganda where he had his early schooling. He returned to Pakistan to complete his education studying at the Foreman Christian College, Lahore, where he graduated with a degree in Sciences from Punjab University. In Uganda he became renowned as an outstanding civic leader, a politician and a leader of the Asian community and had frequent dealings with the highest officials of the Ugandan administration, including Prime Ministers and Presidents. In his various capacities he contributed substantially to the social, community and political life of the country. He was forced to flee Uganda in September 1972 with his family and came to settle in Leicester. Beginning life again in Leicester, he built a new business for his family whilst choosing initially to stay away from civic and political life, greatly disenchanted with the prevalent racism and attitudes he found in Leicester and other British cities. In the early 1980s he began active involvement in public life. His most significant contribution was in the field of race-relations. As Chairman of the Leicestershire County Council's Race-Relations Committee, he and his colleagues changed the face of race-relations in the city and the county, and the period from 1984 to 1997 ushered in an era of harmonious race and community relations which over the years became the envy of the rest of the country. In 2001 he was awarded an M.B.E. in the Queen's Honours List. He is currently Chairman of the Muslim Forum, a think tank organisation.

Refreshing analysis in current historiography

This book successfully combines the art of writing historical narrative with astute political analysis, and the author addresses a number of key issues in Ugandan history. Amin's rise to power, his hostility towards the Asian community and his dealings with the British are just a few of the topics discussed in this book. Manzoor Moghal has produced an original argument, particularly with regard to the legal issues which surrounded the events of 1972 and the way in which the British government chose to 'protect' its Asian citizens after their expulsion. Perhaps most interesting is the author's examination of the delicate Anglo-Ugandan relations of the period and the role played by the post-imperial British government in the unfolding of events in Ugandan politics. Students of history will find this text to be a refreshing commentary on Idi Amin's regime, even more so because it is written by someone who was familiar with the workings of his mind.

Fair coverage of Idi Amin

Given there are few biographies of Idi Amin, my expectations were pretty high for this biography. For the most part, Lion of Africa did not disappoint. Good coverage of certain historical events such as the Asian expulsion. I would have liked to have learned more about Idi's relationship with Libya. Perhaps more about his personal life, although obscure. Strangely, the book lacked any detail/account of some of the tactics used to eliminate adversaries; political or idealogical. A good start as far as learning more about a very important figure in history.

Great read

A very enjoyable and actually quite gripping read. You don't always expect that from biographies and histories, but the touches of memoir brought in from the author's own meetings and dealings with Amin and some of the insights into the time then that they give in the wider human contexts of people trying to get through those times really give the book an added dimension and I was unable to put the book down until I finished it. It does deal with the relevant politics of the time, but this is by no means a book focused on politics. It's focus is the rise and fall of an extraordinary figure that this book is perhaps the first address in a way that goes really far beyond the 'buffoon' characterisations and understands a kind of African bush intelligence that Amin had that was far in excess of what is generally considered of him.

A funny, lighthearted, clever read that turns poignant at the end. I highly recommend this book and this author! Her characters jump off the page and engage you so much that you forget they're not real.

A light read - good, but not great

I won a signed copy of this book from the Goodreads First Reads program.

First, I have to get this out of the way. When I saw this book on the list of giveaways, I had no clue its as a YA. For whatever reason, this cover doesn’t look YA for me. The cover is very dark and serious IMO, and the book is more light and comedic, though it does address some serious subjects. That said, I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that it WAS in fact teen fiction, because that’s primarily what I read.

The basic premise of this story is a teen girl named Lily crashes her car and dies for a few minutes. Upon being resuscitated, she realizes she’s now plagued by their weird blobby things. They follow her everywhere and are super distracting. Soon after, with the help of Zoe, a psychic medium goth from her school, she realizes they’re ghosts that have come back with her from the Other Side. There’s another presence, that of a really hot teen boy named Nick. She’s sure he’s a ghost, but he claims he’s not dead. He doesn’t look like the other ghost blobs, so what is he? Things are just starting to get weird for her.

Lily was a tough character for me to warm up to. She’s very prissy and OCD. She hordes hand sanitizer like it’s going out of style and likes things prim and proper. The story starts out with her being stupid and crashing her car because she’s staring at the polish on her fingernails instead of watching the road. (It was a really terrible color on her, or so she claims.)

I did eventually warm up to Lily, by about 30% in I was kind of liking her. By the end I did really like her. So, that was kind of cool, going from not really caring about her to actually feeling strong emotions over what she’s going through.

Actually, I think the author did a really good job with all of the characters. At first they appear one way, but then as you get to know them, you realize that there are layers beneath them that make them the way they are. Lily is OCD and perfect because her baby sister died at 3 months old and her parents have never been able to move on, even after 9 years. Afraid to step on any toes, she overcompensates by trying to be perfect. Then there’s Zoe, the goth girl from school who can see the ghosts. Lily always thought she was a super weird freak, but she soon realizes that Zoe is not only super nice, but also sort of insecure. Her parents don’t really seem to care, so perhaps she dresses in the goth style in order to get attention.

Rating this book was really hard. It started off with me not being so keen on the book, we were thrown instantly into the action and I almost felt like I was missing something. Then as it went on, I warmed up to the characters and the plot. But then it would drag for a while and I didn’t feel that “I NEED TO READ” feeling after putting the book down until the very end. I did read the last 45% of the book (some 80 pages) over the course of about 2 hours just because A. I wanted to be done reading this book, and B. There was suddenly a lot of action and I HAD to know what would happen next. If there had been more of that during the beginning/middle of the book, this would have been a 4-5 star read.

In the end, I was left with warm and tingly feelings, so when forced to choose a solid star rating, I will round up to a 4.

(I really liked Nick. I want to read more books with guys like Nick.)

A story that made me smile

Lily dies because of a bad manicure. Fortunately someone rescues her. When she wakes up in the hospital a while later she sees all kinds of black blobs. She soon finds out that they are ghosts. One of them is different. He isn't a blob, he's a real person, a very hot one, and his name is Nick. He needs Lily's help, but Lily has no idea where to start. She isn't afraid to ask for help though and together with her new friend Zoe and Mr. Wan from the nail salon she starts to unravel the truth. She doesn't have much time left and when she finds out what it is she has to take immediate action, otherwise something really bad will happen...

Tiger Lily is a fun and romantic ghost story. Lily is completely herself. She has a distinct personality. She loves to have her nails done in certain colors, she uses a lot of hand sanitizer and she wears cute outfits. Nick is a bad boy and at first he mostly annoys her, but soon they find out they like each other. He's kind and supportive, but he doesn't remember much about who he is and why he needs Lily's help. She has to figure out why he's by her side and what's happened to him. I liked the friendship aspect of the story. Lily is lucky in that department. There are many people who want to help her with her search. The accident has changed her, but not so much that she's a completely different person. She lets her friends transform her when it's needed, but she stays the same Lily underneath. Lily knows who she is, she knows what her problems are and she isn't afraid to face them.

Tiger Lily is a wonderful story. I really enjoyed reading it. There's a lot going on and I often had a smile on my face while I was reading this story. There are also serious aspects, but there were many things that made me smile. Lily has her quirks and she doesn't hide them. She is who she is, which is refreshing. She often lands herself in situations that are out of her comfort zone and they made me laugh. I loved this story, it's sweet, it's fast paced and Wende Dikec has a great sense of humor. If you like entertaining paranormal romance you should definitely try this book.

Poorly written fan-fiction that only dedicated fans of the franchise will enjoy

Let me start off by saying that I am a complete fanatic when it comes to the BioShock series. I have played three entries countless times, and any time I come across some form of merchandise, I have to have it.

I happened to discover this work and The Big Daddy (also by author Brubaker) here on Amazon and decided to add them to my collection. While The Big Daddy definitely was an enjoyable read and I believe fit in quite well with the story of Rapture, Welcome to Genesis read like an elementary school horror story and is barely supported by any actual canon from the BioShock universe. Spoilers follow.

Set in the time following the events of BioShock 2, the book follows the story of Roosevelt (no first name given), a man working for the U.S. government, to find the mythical city of Rapture. He has his team wiped out, is kidnapped, and ends up in Rapture (now Genesis, hence the title).

What entails is Brubaker's interpretation of what happened to Rapture after Eleanor Lamb escaped from Rapture in BioShock 2. I am inclined to think that his story is meant to be in the universe where the truly 'evil' ending to the second game occurs, where Eleanor Lamb kills her mother Sofia as well as her protector/father Subject Delta. While there is no way of knowing exactly what happened to Rapture following her escape, Brubaker certainly took no shortage of liberties in creating his own world where Lamb returned to Rapture and took power again.

The one reason why I won't completely trash this book as garbage is because of his inclusion of items from the world of BioShock Infinite: salts and vigors. While these items do not belong in Rapture or this book at all, I cannot rule out the possibility that it is because of Infinite that this book is not complete trash: it is set in one of the infinite universes that Infinite brought into the scope of the world of BioShock. It may be nothing but a fan-fiction since creative director Ken Levine has said nothing about what occurred after BioShock 2, but the infinite-world possibilities that BioShock Infinite brought with it make the work a little more believable.

That being said, the nuances in the world brought about by technicalities created by the very games this book is supposed to take place in are not enough to save it. Short, choppy writing and lackluster details are not something one enjoys reading, and poor character development is poor character development. If the author had actually spent some more time on details and the book was edited properly (on the back cover of the book, Bathysphere is misspelled twice in the same sentence, see photo for evidence of both improper spelling and subpar grammar), Welcome to Genesis could actually have been a welcome addition to the BIOSHOCK universe.

Unless you are a dedicated fan of the BioShock series like I am and are interested in a fan-fiction about it, do yourself a favor and pick up Rapture by John Shirley instead of this book. I sincerely hope that if Brubaker releases any more entries, they are more like The Big Daddy and less like Goosebumps.

Good book, but story was alittle rushed.

Wasn't bad, the only problem was it lacked a lot of detail. I would've liked to know more about what everything looked like and what certain things felt like(don't want to give away any plot points). But I have no regrets, I bought, read and enjoyed it. I will never complain about returning to rapture!
