A polar bear cub wonders how to measure his mother's love in this enchanting picture book. On a pared-down palette of matte blues and greens reminiscent of the frigid arctic landscape, Kern introduces Polo and his cuddlesome friends, a young reindeer, penguin, seal pup and wolf cub. Each in turn helpfully attempts to describe the expanse of his own mother's love: "My mother loves me with all her wings," says Pinpin the penguin (or "flippers" for the seal, "teeth" for the wolf). For Polo, none of these responses sounds quite right; in a series of tender, double-page embraces between him and his mother, he seeks from her the appropriate answer. "Does that mean you love me with all your fur?" he asks. She assures him that she loves him with that and more. Meanwhile, Kern depicts, in simply detailed illustrations, with visibly textured brushwork, the gradual setting of the sun over the icy horizon; and as the shadows lengthen behind the bear cub's applauding friends, soon Polo slumbers beneath the protective paw of his mother. Kern's playful juxtapositions (at one point, many of the baby animals ride on the wolf's back) and close-up, irresistible hugs are ideally suited to the gentle question-and-answer text. Ages 2-6.

PreSchool-K?Polo, a young polar bear, is puzzled when a friend tells him that his mother loves him with all her heart. As he heads for home, he asks the pals he meets along the way how their mothers love them. Felix, a seal, says that his mother loves him with all her flippers; Pinpin, a penguin, answers, "with all her wings"; etc. When he arrives home, Polo's mother tells him that she loves him with her fur, with her eyes that shine when she sees him, with her paws when she tickles him, etc. Bordering on precious, this is a warmhearted treatment of how children enjoy being assured of their parents' affections. Originally published in Belgium, the adapted English text is approachable and to the point. The oil paintings are done in cool colors, appropriate to the arctic setting. This title would work well as a storyhour read-aloud; children will enjoy seeing Polo being hugged, tickled, and kissed by his doting mother. Kern neatly skirts the I-love-you-more-than school of competitive affection by putting maternal love into properly absolute terms. Polo, a young polar bear, is told during his icy bath to be careful ``or you will worry your mother who loves you with all her heart.'' The expression perplexes Polo: How can he be loved with all his mother's heart? He polls his friends about their mothers' love. The penguin's mother loves him with all her wings, the seal's with all her flippers, and so forth. When Polo returns to his mother, he snuggles against her and asks if she loves him with all her fur. Yes, she says, and proceeds to count the other wayswith her eyes that shine when she sees him, ``with my nose because you smell so sweet,'' with her paws and her back and her belly. Polo gets the message. The tender and richly colored illustrations outstrip the text, with Polo's friends hovering in the background during his quest, and the love practically rolling off the polar bears' fur. I have been reading this book to my children for almost 19 years now. This most recent purchase is for my oldest daughter's birthday (now a freshman in college) so that she will have a copy in her dorm as well!!

This is not just one more goopy mother-love book.

By telling about love from the points of view of different animals, this book manages to be warm and comforting and at the same time stretches the imaginations of young children. The pictures are beautiful enough for a child to look at alone, but the book begs to be read aloud. It is a great bedtime book, especially when a toddler's life has been just a bit too hectic or challeging that day.

A Warm Story With Lovable Characters

A very good bedtime read for children, 3-8. Children will enjoy Polo, a young polar bear as he questions his various animal friends of how their mothers love them. They each respond with different answers, but ultimately Polo questions his mother of her love for him. Mother tells him of all of the ways that she loves him, and the story ends happily.
There is nothing unique in this story, but children will enjoy it thoroughly. The book is brief, the illustrations are very good, and story is easily understood by children.

THIRTEEN ESSAYS ON CONTEMPORARY WRITERS, AND SEVERAL PHILOSOPHICAL TOPICS

Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) was a French existentialist philosopher, playwright, novelist, and political activist, who wrote many other books such as Being and Nothingness, Existentialism....& Human Emotions, The Transcendence of the Ego, Search for a Method, Critique of Dialectical Reason, The Emotions: Outline Of A Theory, The Psychology of Imagination, Between Existentialism and Marxism, etc.

This 1955 collection of essays includes essays on Francois Mauriac; Albert Camus; William Faulkner; John Dos Passos, and well as on “American Cities,” “Cartesian Freedom,” “Materialism and Revolution,” etc.

He says in the essay on Mauriac “It occurred to me… that Christian writers, by the very nature of their belief, have the kind of mentality best suited to the writing of novels. The religious man is free. The supreme forbearance of the Catholic may irritate us, because it is an acquired thing. If he is a novelist, it is a great advantage. The fictional and the Christian man, who are both centres of indeterminacy, do have characters, but only in order to escape from them. They are free, above and beyond their natures, and it they succumb to their natures, here again, they do so freely. They may get caught up I psychological machinery, but they themselves are never mechanical.” (Pg. 8)

He states, “La Fin De La Nuit (The End of the Night) is not a novel. How can anyone call this angular, glacial book, with its analyses, theatrical passages, and poetic meditations, a ‘novel’? How can anyone confuse these bursts of speed and violent jamming of the brakes, these abrupt starts and breakdowns, with the majestic flow of fictional time? How can anyone be taken in by this motionless narrative, which betrays its intellectual framework from the very start… It is, at most, a collection of signs and intentions. M. Mauriac is not a novelist.” (Pg. 24)

He says of Camus’ The Stranger: “His hero … belongs to a very particular species for which the author reserves the word ‘absurd.’ But in M. Camus’ work this word takes on two very different meanings. The absurd is both a state of fact and the lucid awareness which certain people acquire of this state of fact. The ‘absurd’ man is the man who does not hesitate to draw the inevitable conclusions from a fundamental absurdity.” (Pg. 26-27) He adds, “M. Camus shows off a bit by quoting passages from Jaspers, Heidegger and Kierkegaard, whom, by the way, he does not always seem to have understood.” (Pg. 28)

He begins the essay on Dos Passos: “A novel is a mirror. So everyone says. But what is meant by READING a novel? It means, I think, jumping into the mirror. You suddenly find yourself on the other side of the glass, among people and objects that have a familiar look. But they merely look familiar. We have never really seen them. The things of our world have, in turn, become outside reflections. You close the book, step over the edge of the mirror and return to this honest-to-goodness world, and you find furniture, gardens, and people who have nothing to say to you. The mirror that closed behind you reflects them peacefully, and now you would swear that art is a reflection.” (Pg. 94) He concludes the essay, “Dos Passos’ world---like those of Faulkner, Kafka and Stendhal---is impossible because it is contradictory. But therein lies its beauty. Beauty is a veiled contradiction. I regard Dos Passos as the greatest writer of our time.” (Pg. 103)

In an essay on “Individualism and Conformism in the United States,” he states, “I have said enough, I hope, to give some idea of how the American is subjected, from the cradle to the grave, to an intense drive to organize and Americanize him, and how he is first depersonalized by means of a constant appeal to his reason, civic sense and freedom, and how, once he has been duly fitted into the national life by professional associations and educational and other edifying organizations, he suddenly regains consciousness of himself and his personal autonomy. He is then free to escape into an almost Nietzschean individualism, the kind symbolized by the skyscrapers in the bright sky of New York. In any event, it is not based on our kind of individualism, but on conformism. Personality must be won. It is a social function or the affirmation of society.” (Pg. 113)

He suggests, “A man cannot be more of a man than other men because freedom is similarly infinite in each individual. In this sense, no one has shown better than Descartes the connection between the spirit of science and the spirit of democracy, for universal suffrage cannot be founded on anything other than this universal faculty of saying yes or saying no.” (Pg. 183-184) He continues, “The free man is alone in the face of an absolutely free God. Freedom is the foundation of being, its secret dimension. Freedom, in this rigorous system, is the inner meaning and the true face of necessity.” (Pg. 196)

He argues, “I realize now that materialism is a metaphysics hiding positivism; but it is a self-destructive metaphysics, for by undermining metaphysics out of principle, it deprives its own statements of any foundation.” (Pg. 201)

Two Very Enjoyable Reads

"Naturally Naughty" by Leslie Kelly (2002) is my introduction to her writing. I wouldn't normally go for a book that had the back cover blurb that this one had because it was about revenge, but I am already a Jill Shalvis fan, and this book is related to her book "Naughty but Nice."

I was very impressed with Leslie Kelly! "Naturally Naughty" was an easy, well written, enjoyable read. If you like a read with non-stop sex, this will not disappoint! I liked Kate and Jack and the chemistry between them and how much they learned about themselves, their families, and the town that they grew up in.

"Wicked & Willing" By Leslie Kelly (2003) sealed Leslie Kelly onto my list on authors. I will gleefully track down every one of her back list titles and read them in order now. I was moved by Venus a.k.a Violet's story of finding herself and finding love.

Fun to read

Naturally Naughty was a fun, quick read... but the 2nd one, Wicked & Willing, it a bit slow for me... and I really don't like the way the womans part is written. It's a bit hard to believe for me, but that's part of the reason we read these books... fantasy.

Even better than I expected!

Next to The Mark Of Athena, this was my most awaited book of the year. The instant my friends and I got hold of the ebook, the four of us crowded around one kindle to read~ and squeal~ over the it. I had high expectations for this book, and, well, it completely exceeded them!
To start off, we get an awesome story taken from Luke Castellan's own diary, from the days when he and Thalia were on the run. It's action packed and FULL of witty humour. Luke has a very different voice than Percy's, and I think that after having read this, many people will like him more. And is Thalia/Luke really a thing...? Riordan answers all of our questions in it, so read the book to find out!
Then, we have "Percy Jackson And The Staff Of Hermes", from the days when Percy and Annabeth had just started dating. It's their one month anniversary, and Percy just might have forgotten... Do any of you miss the cute and dumb Percy from the earlier series? Well, he's back and better than ever! I love Percy and Annabeth's banter, and this funny and sweet story~ full with a date, a monster, a god and two particularily amusing snakes~ just makes me anticipate The Mark Of Athena even more than my mental health can manage.
Thirdly, there is a story involving Leo, Jason and Piper. Leo's really busy building the Argo II, but no thanks to a walking table who likes to be polished only in a certain way, he runs into very big trouble threatening to blow up Bunker Nine. There are crazy stalkerish psycho nymphs who worship Mr. D, Jason and Piper are officially a couple, and Leo is hilarious.
Some activities and an interview involving the aforementioned snakes are scattered around the book. Then in the end, Rick Riordan's son wrote a small story, also in the theme of demigods. I didn't like that story as much as the rest, but that was probably because it had completely new characters in it.
All in all, I really liked this book. My friends and I "awwwww"~ed a lot, especially during the first two stories. So if you can't wait for The Mark Of Athena to come out, or want your faith in The Heroes Of Olympus restored, read this book!

There were twists and turns, but i didn't like some mixed up parts of real mythology.

About the Author

Steven M. Cahn is Professor of Philosophy at The City University of New York Graduate Center. He is the author or editor of more than fifty books. Most recently, he wrote From Student to Scholar: A Candid Guide to Becoming a Professor (2008) and coauthored Happiness and Goodness: Philosophical Reflections on Living Well (2015). Dr. Cahn is the editor of The World of Philosophy (OUP, 2015), Exploring Philosophy, Fifth Edition (OUP, 2014), Political Philosophy, Third Edition (OUP, 2014), and Exploring Ethics, Third Edition (OUP, 2013).
