I thought this was a good follow-up to the first part in this "series" (is it a series, 'cause I haven't heard of another part coming out). There was definitely some confusion as to why the guy was doing what he was. I felt bad for him, and the girl to be honest, and I still can't say whether he made the right choice or not. I did think their reunion kind of came out of nowhere and in an unnecessary spot lol. It made me think of how that really would have played out in real life, and all I did was giggle. Any who, the way it ended left me wondering if there was going to be another part to this series. I'm hoping it is and Ms. Beckton ties it up and finishes it nicely.

Pretty weak

Part two if this story was pretty weak and short. David's girlfriend is in a coma, not sitting at home being cheated on. What a let down. Shannon was kind if pathetic in my opinion and naive for bring 40. The ending was pretty lame as well. Overall disappointing it took me less then an hour to read.

Pass the Plonk, Please

Something has happened to food writing over the past decade or so. So much of it now is dedicated to specialist topics such as sustainable farming, organic produce, head to tail cooking, dining experiences involving sous-vide or foam. These articles are like hanging out at a wine tasting where everyone is a wine snob and you don't know what they are talking about and you are reluctant to mention that your personal favorite is the vintage last year red that's sold in a jug.

I like stories about chili cook-offs or why someone decided to stop being a vegetarian or what it's like to be a wait person or dishwasher or busboy, which is what food writing was before the specialists got hold of it. Even the big chefs of old, Julia Child, James Beard, and other foodies like M.F.K. Fisher and Craig Claiborne, wrote essays that were about life beyond food, and they rarely took themselves too seriously.

This year's Best Food Writing starts out with the ponderous chef-heavy writing and works its way to the more personal essays. The best pieces are toward the back of the book. My favorite was an unexpected essay by comedy writer John DeVore. He declared that Taco Bell has the best Mexican food. Preposterous! Then he proceeded to back up his statement quite convincingly. The article started out with a dude-ish tone but quickly moved on to a more thoughtful and even touching conclusion.

Even Anthony Bourdain took a break from his tough guy posturing to write an ode to the clams of his childhood and the pleasure of passing on a tradition to his daughter. I also enjoyed the story of Friday Night Meatballs and that of Carolyn Phillips' connecting with her Chinese father-in-law by cooking a holiday meal with him.

There's enough variety in the collection to be sure that you won't walk away from Best Food Writing 2015 hungry.

A feast!

I've been buying and reading the Best Food Writing series since BFW 2000 came out (the year it started) - and this, the 13th volume, has more pages added to it with an even more diverse range of topics. I love how Holly Hughes spots the trends and organizes the articles around the trends, which are relevant. I hope she keeps this up for years and years to come...because not only is she a genius at selecting the articles and discerning the trends, she does so deftly and it feels like returning to an old friend's kitchen table, picking up where we last left off, and having a feast.

I love love love this book. It's a collection of essays of great food writing and all of the ones that I've read in here are amazing. They really connect how food writing isn't just about the food itself but it has to do with the people that you eat food with and the places where you eat food. There was only one or two that I thought were ehh. The essays made me cry, the made me laugh, and the essays made me remember why I loved eating food. This isn't one of those sit down and read the whole book type things its more of a book that you want to sit down and flip thru the pages until you find one that you want to read. It's a great book to keep around the house to inspire you! Would recommend this book!!!

If you are going to play the game of business, you MUST read winning the customer

I was fortunate to get an advance copy of Winning the Customer and truly found it valuable. Lou Imbriano, former CMO for the New England Patriots, combines fantastic business insights with engaging stories, many centering around his experience with the Patriot's organization, as well as a bevy of other anecdotes.

I have personally been involved in creating major customer loyalty efforts and the counsel that Lou and Elizabeth put forth in this book is dead-on for a new era of customer engagement.

While the stories utilize sports analogies for illustrative (and entertainment) purposes, the ideas are applicable to virtually any company, big or small, B2B or B2C and industry agnostic.

You will want to add this one to your business library immediately and should find yourself referring back to continue to create customer engagement, increase revenues and create win-win scenarios between your business and its biggest fans.

Book presents nothing earth shattering. Mostly reinforces what most companies already do / know

The book is a light quick read. Should not take the average reader more then 2-3 sittings to go through.

Overall, the book, presents nothing earth shattering. Mainly it focuses on concepts vs. actionable tactics. For example, the book discusses at length how important it is to get to know your customers and their habits. Try to move a level 4 customer to a Level 3 to a Level 2 to a Level 1. I think we all know that concept and try to do it each day, but it's easier said in concept vs. action.

Another concept in the book is Customer Service. The book tells numerous stories how everyone in your company should be an ambassador of your brand / company and every interaction counts. Again, I think most of us know this.

If you work in the sports industry there are a few good stories and ideas to implement at your team to add value. I really enjoyed the changes Lou made on the away game trips when bringing sponsors. Having had the opportunity in the past to travel with a team, the items and care Lou instituted would have made the trip much more memorable and more of a story than it was.

Overall it's a decent book that you can read quickly and reinforce many of the things your company does already. You should come away with at least 1 new idea, which makes it worth the time to read and price of the book.

This book answers the question, "How did he do that?"

Revenue increased more than 600% while the author was CMO of the New England Patriots. What I like about this book is that it answers the question, "How did he do that?" It is like having a privileged peek inside the pages of a magician's diary. Lou opens up his bag of tricks to share his secrets to success in Winning the Customer. With engaging detailed stories from first hand experience, he tells you exactly how to find your key audience, connect with them in a meaningful way, and then astound them with performance that exceeds their expectations and keeps them coming back to you for more. What I learned is that just as with the best magic, there is no smoke and mirrors, just a common sense, well thought out strategy which is practiced to perfection, and executed with precision every time without fail.

I highly recommend this book not only for its creative insights to marketing strategies for revenue growth, but also for its solid advice on building strong interpersonal and business relationships.

Gellerman presents examples of psychological approaches to organization design, labor relations, shop-floor supervision, sales tactics, and other problems in organizational management that are not ordinarily thought of as psychological at all. Several of these cases required the author to uncover unrealistic assumptions about human nature that were the basis of corporate policies and proposed legislation. In other cases, he deduced the unwritten rules for effective decision-making used at both ends of the management hierarchy: in one case, the decision rules used by a company's top executives; and in another case, a quite different set of decision rules used by another company's shop-floor supervisors. He also traced the origins of a disastrous strike back to its ultimate cause, and helped management change its tactics so a repetition could be avoided. In the only one of these cases which resembles conventional psychological work, he helped a vice presidential bad boss achieve lasting changes in his supervisory style. The cases demonstrate the remarkable range of different managerial problems to which the special training of the psychologist can be usefully applied.

About the Author

SAUL GELLERMAN is a Management Consultant and Professor of Management at the University of Dallas. His long, distinguished career as a consulting industrial psychologist has taken him into corporations and management associations in 35 countries and provided him with material for nine previous books and numerous articles. He holds a doctorate in clinical and industrial psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and is a Diplomate in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology. An earlier book, Motivation and Productivity (1963) was awarded the McKinsey Foundation Prize by the Academy of Management. He also is also the producer of 29 management training films.

Dr. Saul Gellerman's book is well written and provides excellent examples of various problems encountered by management in work places. The first ten chapters of his book look at various cases he has been asked to consult upon.

My favourites were: Chapter Two-about how IBM wanted to pin-point young potential future executives and fast-track them through everything the company was involved in to give a broad range manager capable of dealing with anything and Chapter Nine, where the CEO of a prominent organisation, who has strongly held ideas on what his manager's should be like, engage Dr Gellerman. After the author has conducted his research, he has to confront management with advice. Throughout this book, Dr. Gellerman patiently outlines how systems can be improved and problems resolved. In his last chapter, he gives sound advice on how to resolve and find new ideas, by the simple art of listening.The book also illustrates how some management problems are best examined by someone who does not have some emotional attachment to one side of a dispute.

I found this book very insightful and a great reference for some studies I am currently undertaking on management systems and how to look at change in those systems. The book is written in an easy style and captures the reader's interest from the outset. Well done, Dr. Gellerman!

A real insider's look at some thorny management dilemmas.

In How People Work, Psychological Approaches to Management Issues, University of Dallas Professor of Management and longtime management consultant Gellerman opens his personal files to reveal an intriguing cross-section of cases on which he has consulted over the years. Devoting one chapter to each of ten unique workplace dilemmas, he takes us inside a variety of enterprises, from corporate titans like IBM to a small German firm selling fasteners exclusively to import automobile repair shops. Gellerman's style is highly engaging and readable, even folksy at times. Yet his analysis of the dynamics of human behavior and interaction in the workplace is sophisticated and sage, leaving little doubt in the reader's mind as to why the companies profiled here called upon him to diagnose and remedy their most intractable business problems.
The greatest strength of Gellerman's book is the exceptionally keen insight he provides into the psychological pitfalls of operations in complex, contemporary business organizations. The one weakness in his otherwise thorough discussion is his frequent failure to identify the time periods during which some of the cases occurred. Some indication of the dates connected with these stories would permit the reader to place the events described into a larger contextual framework. I found myself wondering whether the situations I was reading about had played out against a backdrop of eighties' corporate belt-tightening and downsizing, or during the unprecedented stock market boom of the nineties.
No dry or lofty treatise on the psychology of imponderable business issues, How People Work is actually quite a page-turner with appeal for a broad audience. Gellerman's analysis of what drives us all to act as we do in the workplace has wider implications for other arenas in life. Nearly everyone will find something of a personal nature to relate to in this book. I heartily recommend it for all those interested in gaining a better understanding of how people work.
