Great little reference guide for the graphic designer

This book should be on the reference shelf of anyone designing or evaluating logos. It is compact and packed with information on shapes, images and symbols from the perpectives of cultures around the world - from prehistory forward. It is illustrated and cross-referenced. Every day we pretend we live in a normal home, and every day more garbage arrives. The stench of denial is stifling. We leave as soon as we can to turn our new homes into dumps, taking with us as much garbage as we can carry.
Some of us create our own dumps from scratch. We grow up in loving homes where getting drunk or stoned does not excuse immature behavior. We order loads of garbage until our parents accept living in a dump or force us to leave.
In either case, many of us suddenly realize we live in a dump. Be it a mansion or a mission, it is a dump. Every day the dumptrucks pull up, driven by bitter children, ex-spouses, angry bosses, police officers, and unsympathetic judges.
We cannot understand why they keep "dumping" on us. It takes some of us a long time to remember we ordered this garbage. It takes us even longer to realize we can refuse delivery on other people's trash.
Not using alcohol and other drugs (AAOD), slows the pace of delivery. Loads still arrive, but most often they are loads ordered before we got clean and sober. The alcoholic who stops drinking still lives in a dump, but with luck most of the garbage will rot away. He may have to deal with other people's loads.
Recovery requires cleaning out the dump. We get rid of old garbage and learn to refuse other people's garbage. In recovery we get out from under loads we don't remember ordering that arrive after we get clean and sober.

Surprisingly "unputdownable"!

This book is a surprisingly warm and inspirational read, and it really is "unputdownable" (as Bristol's version of Time Out put it). Far from a dry textbook account of pupils' lives after school, it is really a collection of short autobiographies by very interesting, warm, and vibrant people who have lived life to the full, unfettered by the type of insecure baggage that can attach itself to children in more mainstream education. I started reading it just as I was beginning to think that I needed to be more authoritarian with my 3 yr old in order to get him to be adequately 'obedient'. I feel genuinely grateful to have read this book in time to realise that children must at all times be treated with respect - obviously not over-indulged, which isn't what it's about either- but that they should be gently guided and nurtured so that their own personalities can flourish, and always treated with respect in order to generate and receive their reciprocal respect, rather than trying to physically or psychologically beat it into them! This respect is what the pupils in After Summerhill (one from each decade of it's 90 yrs in existence) experienced and their lives and personalities clearly blossomed for them as a result. I recommend it to anyone interested in children, education, human well-being, or just interested in a good read - it's great!

Meets the Purpose

This book did provide interviews with Summerhill alumni from different generations and provide their look back and thoughts on their time at Summerhill, and how the post-Summerhill life treated them. The main interviews were conducted during mid 1990 with the short post-script in 2011. If you are considering any of the progressive/democratic schools for your kid, I recommend reading this book as a part of your research.

Kind of drags

It was good to get some perspective from people who had gone through the school, but a lot of the accounts wandered and dragged. This makes the book kind of monotonous considering that many of these subjects have had fairly interesting lives.

The thing that I probably found most interesting is that many of the former students said that they knew other students felt one way, but they did not, and that they saw different strengths and weaknesses with the system that kind of makes me wonder if some of the concepts used by Summerhill really don't make that much difference.

The biggest thing that the school did well was probably fostering independence and adaptability, but I suspect those things could happen in other ways as well.

After reading this book to my six year old I asked him how many stars I should give it and he said 100. (And he knows Amazon's rating only goes up to five.) For me I'd give it a three. The book takes about ten minutes to read aloud, half the limericks are good and the pictures are well done. My son loves cats but we can not have one due to allergies so books and movies such as The Adventures of Milo and Otis are about it for us.

Lovely wee book with short and funny limericks about cats. Beautiful illustrations to go with each. A nice introduction to poetry for children. My only criticism would be it is maybe a little too short, I wanted more! Look forward to future titles from the author.
