The Source of Target Earth

This short story served as the basis for the classic science fiction film "Target Earth," which should make any fan of the film eager to read it. Aside from that, however, it's a darn good story. The situation of a disparate group of people alone in a mysteriously deserted city is handled identically in story and film, as are the personality types, though the story naturally goes more into depth. Where story and film diverge is in the treatment of the alien invaders. Whereas the film puts them center stage and makes them menacing and dangerous, the story treats them almost as an afterthought. That's because the story is not about the invasion but the establishment of relationships in the midst of a disintegrating society, while an invasion (with killer robots) is the only reason to buy a ticket to the film. Both story and film are excellent, and both are worth your time.

Exciting Story Made Into Feature Film

As I was reading this classic sci-fi story I kept thinking, "wow this would make a great movie." Imagine my surprise when I looked up the author and found out Hollywood agreed with me! Late 50's film called Target Earth is based on this story.

Imagine waking up to a deserted city, no signs of life, staring windows being the only eyes you see. This is the experience of 5 very different people. Read to find out why and if anyone is left standing at the end. Tightly written with well drawn characters. The story doesn't really date itself, so you aren't jolted out while reading. My only complaint is that Hollywood hasn't updated this classis tale. Quick, fun read. Highly recommend.

So very happy I purchased this wonderful book of designs!

This book is wonderful if you LOVE double-running stitch, or as it is more commonly known, blackwork, embroidery. Many, many patterns taken from museums and private collections by Louisa Pesel, and expertly drawn on graph paper with notes on color and the sampler that the design was taken from. There are patterns for bands of Double Running Stitch, Montenegrin Stitch, Assissi, Satin Stitch, Bargello, and Needlelace. THE SAMPLER ON THE DUST JACKET IS NOT CHARTED NOR DOES NOT APPEAR ANYWHERE IN THIS BOOK!!! I almost did not purchase this fantastic book because of the sampler photo on the cover.as I prefer books that cover 17th century English band samplers. This book does not disappoint - unless you are expecting a wordy dissertation on historical embroidery. This is NOT that kind of tome. This is for the needleworker who wants to stitch her own sampler.The only extensive writing in this book is a two page "Foreword", the rest of "Historical Designs for Embroidery" is nothing but charted designs.
Purchase this book if you can, you will not regret it. It is wonderful!

Just Okay...

Glad I was able to check this out at my local library before purchasing it. While many of the stories are touching, particularly those about his family, there are some bumps. There is a lot of name dropping, and as another reviewer put it, it seems as if BC is best friends with everyone. I'm not looking for lurid tales about Hollywood, but this seems slightly impossible. Also, while I didn't mind the foul language, it just felt incongruous. However, what really turned me off was his rant about how he "hates" fat people. That's just not funny or very compassionate to assume everyone who is overweight eats too much and is lazy. He wants his listeners to know he's in great shape and exercises a lot. Which is commendable...and I'm glad he can afford a trainer. But not everyone is that lucky. Nor is everyone lucky enough to be in good health and thus be able to either exercise or use their bodies as they wish. Still, he's entitled to his opinions, just as I'm entitled not to recommend his book.

Fantastic Audio Book

I received this wonderful audio book for Christmas (2013) and I'm already listening to Billy's stories for a second time. I love this book on CD, it makes everything about my daily commute better. Billy's stories are both funny and touching. The way he shares them with you makes you feel like you're actually spending time with him as if you're old friends. I was fortunate enough to see his one man show, 700 Sundays, and like I said to my parents afterwards, it's the most moving and enjoyable show I've ever seen. Billy is a master of sharing his life's stories in a way that isn't a "speaker" to "audience" relationship, it's friend to friend. When the audio book ended I felt a sense of loss because Billy wouldn't be telling me any more stories, so I started listening all over again...it's that good.

Now, I'm a Billy Crystal fan

Billy takes the reader through the absurdities and challenges that come with life, and adds a father's, brother's, uncle's, and husband's perspective for the reader's benefit. I enjoyed his brand of absurd humor as I drove my car on errands and listened to his autobiography.

When I finished reading Still Foolin' 'Em, I felt I knew who Billy Crystal is. Billy is a nice, tolerant, and kind person. He and his wife have managed to live well-balanced lives despite the harsh demands of Billy's occupation. Although Billy's been around a while, up until now I've seen little of his work. After reading his autobiography, Still Foolin' 'Em, I borrowed his movies, When Harry Met Sally, and City Slickers One and Two from the library. Now, I'm a Billy Crystal fan.

If someone wants a pleasant, laid-back audio experience, Still Foolin'Em is a good choice. I recommend this particular book in audio over hard copy book. Either medium, however, is a good choice.

Commentary on Romans

James Mongomery Boice is one of the best Bible Study writers I have come across, for the layman. He makes difficult topics simple and easy to understand. I have read this set of Romans, My husband did an indepth study over 2006. I purchaced a copy for my 20 year old grandson, at his request, who is attending a Christian University. It meets the needs of all ages in learning more about God's Word. Boice was an excellent writer. I have several of his commentaries and would highly recommend all of his works.

The Universalism Of The Gospel; The Particularism Of Grace

'It is unquestionably true that the Gospel is offered to all, but Christ speaks here of that secret and efficacious manner of teaching by which the children of God only are drawn to faith.' John Calvin, Commentary on John 17:3

Dr Boice was a Reformed preacher in the Calvinist vein, given to sound and faith-stirring exposition of God's holy Word. The Christian Charter is presented through Romans, and Dr Boice invested many years in laying before his flock the moral truths of God's law and the outworking of faith in Christ's atoning death as the satisfaction of God's righteous requirements. Theologians also refer to Romans as the foundational book in Paul's theology.

In Volume 2, p 927, Jim Boice introduces us to the Reformed concept of our great 'God's Effectual Call'. This is in every way beautifully explained and correctly related to the reader, invoking one to give God all the glory! Thanksgiving from a sinner, one undeserving of such grace!

"And those He predestined, He also called.." Romans 8:30

Dr Boice headlines the section: 'Calling: External And Internal'. He then fully explains how the external, audible call goes out to all, resulting in the universal call. It is in itself ineffective for salvation and may be resisted. 'Today that same call flows from every Christian pulpit and from all who bear witness to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in every land.' p 928

BUT THEN...

'...in the New Testament the terms for calling, when used with reference to salvation, are almost uniformly applied, not to the universal call of the Gospel, but to the call that ushers men into a state of salvation and is therefore effectual. There is scarcely an instance in the Bible where the terms are used to designate the indiscriminate overture of grace in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.' p 929, John Murray, as quoted from Redemption: Accomplished & Applied p 88.

Boice then goes on to explain how the inner call, the internal witness of the Holy Spirit, is effective in bringing conversion - a sinner to belief in Christ Jesus through regeneration. This understanding also infuses the utter conviction that it is grace irresistible, for whom God has predestined, He also then calls. More scriptural than that one cannot be.

This Bible Commentary is so easy to read,it's great.

I am a pastor but it will be appreaciated by lay people also.

It's specific in context but not dry.

Illustrations are supplied for some of the text.

I can not think that anyone would be disappointed in this set.
