Poor Introduction to the Subject

What was the impact of the Mongol invasion on Russia? That is the subject of this book. Historians have attempted to answer this question for centuries, and the historiography of the Golden Horde has always been a mixed bag positions. Charles Halperin's belief that an "ideology of silence" limited the impact of the Golden Horde leaves the reader confused as to whether or not Halperin believes that the Mongols had an impact on Russia.

The confusion is a result of Halperin's "defensive" tone throughout the book. Halperin is definitely a revisionist historian whose thesis rubbed off many entrenched Russian historians the wrong way. Halperin's book spends far too much time attempting to discredit previous historical interpretations that have been tested through time. Indeed, the book seems like a long list of historiographical axes to grind.

Furthermore, Halperin's inability to present evidence that suggests that Orthodox Christians had an ideology of silence does not help prove his argument. The lack of primary sources-due to the destruction of limited Mongol writings, as well as the limited written texts of Golden Horde Russia-is not really taken into consideration as to Halperin's argument. Therefore, Halperin's arguments are a variety of "maybe" or "could have" happened events, rather than strong documented interpretations. Halperin himself, despite knowing the limitations of the written record, still encourages readers to "read between the lines" in order to support his argument. However, nowhere does any Russian document state or infer that writers of Russia were in an unified effort of ideological silence. Halperin would want us to assume that each writer of the time was on the same ideological position as the other without ever writing, mentioning or recording it! There is no evidence to support this or Halperin's argument.

Unfortunately, while I don't agree with Halperin's arguments, the book is still used in Universities to introduce students to the Russia and The Golden Horde. In a sense that is the only positive of this book. The historiographical lists throughout the book, and the axes Halperin wants to grind, help provide some knowledge into Mongol Ruled Russia. I would advise that further reading be done to fully appreciate the era, and to make a judgment on Halperin yourselves.

Nice try, but no cigar

There is little here that is not found in more general histories. He thinks that Russian historians have underestimated the Mongol impact on Russia, so specialists may want to check his interpretation. It can be read as a history of the period, but most general histories will work about as well.

Benjamin Franklin was a great writer, inventor, and scientist who is one of the Founding Fathers of America. Ben helped start the United States by being one of the writers of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Ben also liked to help his fellow citizens in whatever way he could. In fact, he organized one of America's first public libraries and first fire department. He even started a public hospital!

Thanks to Ben, Americans were also able to start their new country in peace. He did this by negotiating the 1783 Treaty of Paris.

This treaty ended the Revolutionary War with Great Britain and meant that the United States was now really a country of its own.

Once there was a kid named Benjamin Franklin. Some called him Ben because it's shorter. He was a cool inventor. Some thought he was a good guy but others didn't. Once he wrote news papers and then at night slide them under the post office door. Then in the morning a person would give them to people to read. Finally he said it was him. Everyone people liked the idea but his brother James is disagreed with it. He thought that he should be the smartest in the family not Ben. When Ben was just 17 years old he ran away. He started to work when he arrived at his destination. Then he started to invent stuff. Some things he made were bifocals ( glasses ) , the Franklin Stove , and even started the first firefighter department. Eventually he came back home and was 81 years old.

This new edition incorporates these advances from the field of molecular biology, and describes the resultant opportunities for screening, prenatal diagnosis, genetic counselling and from recent pioneering work with anti-sense oligonucleotides, the possibility of effective RNA
therapy. Although there is still no cure for the disorder, there have been significant developments concerning the gene basis, publication of standards of care guidelines, and improvements in management leading to significantly longer survival, particularly with cardio-pulmonary care. The authors also
investigate other forms of pharmacological, cellular and gene therapies.

M. Quinlivan, Consultant in Neuromuscular Disorders, Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases, National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre, Great Ormond Street Foundation Trust, London UK

Alan EH Emery is a qualified physician, scientist and educator with wide experience of patient care and human genetics laboratory research. In 1966 he was first to describe a unique form of Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy and to discover a significant biochemical defect linked to the pathogenesis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. On this he wrote the first detailed scientific monograph in 1987 (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Oxford University Press; 4th edition, 2014) and in 1989 founded the European Neuromuscular Centre to research related disorders. He has published over 400 scientific papers and written or edited 30 books regarding clinical, biochemical and genetic studies in neuromuscular disorders. For his work over the last 40 years he has received many national and international awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award of the World Federation of Neurology. He is currently a Vice-President of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign of Great Britain.

Francesco Muntoni specialised in Child Neurology and Psychiatry in Italy before moving to England in 1993. From 1993 he worked at Hammersmith Hospital's Neuromuscular Centre under the direction of Professor Victor Dubowitz and after 1996 as the Centre's Research and Clinical Director. In 2007 he moved with the clinic, pathological and research team to Dubowitz Neuromuscular Centre, UCL Institute of Child Health & Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). He continues his clinical and research activities as Lead for the Nationally Commissioned Service on Congenital Muscular Dystrophies and Congenital Myopathies, Neuroscience Theme Lead for Institute of Child Health, and the Novel Therapies Lead for the GOSH Biomedical Research Centre. He is also co-director of the MRC Translational Research Neuromuscular Centre at UCL. In 2011 he received the Premio 'Navicella' for Medical Science Achievements at Castelsardo, Italy, and in 2013 became a Vice-President of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign of Great Britain.

Ros Quinlivan trained at University College London, initially in Psychology and, subsequently, medicine. Her post-graduate training was within London Teaching Hospitals. She has been a Consultant in Neuromuscular Disease for 18 years and has wide clinical experience of both paediatric and adult onset genetic muscular disorders. She is currently the Clinical Lead for Transition for Young Adults with Neuromuscular Disease at Great Ormond Street Hospital and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. She leads the Nationally Commissioned Service for McArdle Disease and related disorders and is joint co-ordinating editor for the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group. In 2010 she was named the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign's 'Clinician of the Year', and is currently an editorial board member for the journal 'Neuromuscular Disorders'.

A fantastic start to a new action-packed trilogy!

When Ben Warner is being bullied at his new school and a cafeteria table suddenly snaps shut by itself, Ben is plunged into the secret world of actuation, a little known science that combines physics and imagination to perform unbelievable feats. It's always been Ben and his mother against the world, plus it's difficult to make friends when you move around so much. He and his mom are a team; his mom needs him - who else would remind her of the small details that slip her mind, like taking her pills? When Dr. Hughes enters his life, introducing him to actuation, and he finds that he has a natural talent for it, Ben feels that he's finally found something of his own. Things turn deadly, however, when an experimental technology Dr. Hughes has been working on is stolen and the doctor herself is taken captive by a group that hopes to use actuation to achieve their nefarious goals.

Ben and his friend Peter are taken in by another group, The Quantum League, a group that also studies actuation but for good... supposedly. The Quantum League might claim they're the good guys, but Ben feels suspiciously like a captive. He panics when he learns that he's been erased from his mother's memory "for the greater good." The League promises that they'll reverse the process, giving his mother's memories back, if Ben cooperates and helps them retrieve Dr. Hughes' technology. Ben doesn't know who to trust, but he'll do anything to get his mother and his life back.

This first installment of Kirby's new Quantum League trilogy, THE SPELL ROBBERS, was a solid beginning. From the start, there's plenty of action and intrigue, hooking readers from the first pages. I loved the descriptions of the League's headquarters, full of agents practicing actuation and plotting missions. It had an superhero/comic book vibe that jumped off the page.

Ben's character was refreshing. He's a natural when it comes to actuation and he's drawn to the power and possibilities, but, at the same time, he loves his mom and can't bear to leave her behind. Few of the other characters bat an eye at having to leave their families behind to become an agent, so Ben's refusal and his vow to do whatever it takes to get his life back really stands out.

I'll definitely be reading the next Quantum League books - this one ended in a really interesting place and with many unanswered questions!

Can't wait for #2!

This was a really fun book! The characters were developed and likable, the pacing was perfect, the plot was engaging, the whole thing was just exciting and fun to read. I don't read a lot of youth fiction, but my 8 year old wanted to read this, so I did too. It was perfect for him! If you're looking for a quality youth fiction read, this one delivers. I would recommend this book to anyone!

A Sure-Fire Hit For Boys and Girls Who Like Heroic Adventure

The Quantum League: Spell Robbers is my first experience with Edgar Award-winning author Matthew J. Kirby, and I was not disappointed. While the plot is not super unique at first glance, Kirby executes wonderfully. Readers' imaginations will be sparked as they watch Ben learn how to "actuate," or use his thoughts to create things like rain clouds and fireballs. And as Kirby tells the tale, he creates a nice comfortable routine for Ben before bringing a sudden surprise that will bring you to the edge of your seat, and he'll keep your attention until the conclusion.

There are a couple of things I particularly enjoyed about the book. First, Ben's character and several others' are surprisingly well-drawn for a middle-grade action story. In this type of book, it's common to let the plot do all the talking, but here the larger storyline is shaped by character development. The emotional impact lends more interest. Secondly, there is moral ambiguity. This is not your stock good guys vs. bad guys story. Ben wrestles with deciding whom to trust and it seems no one comes out entirely clean. Finally, Ben is motivated by his love for his mother and his desire to reunite with her, despite the "detachment" that the so-called good guys perform to wipe him from her memory. There is sadness and complexity in Ben's story (and in the stories of others). And these somber notes inspire the reader to root for him; it's not just bravery but heart that makes Ben heroic. Beyond caring about his mother, he's also a compassionate friend.

Though the conclusion sets up the next installment, you won't feel like you're dangling from a cliff when you finish. But you will be excited about continuing the story to find out what happens next! I know I am!

With a quick-moving plot, and action and intrigue enough to keep even reluctant readers turning the pages, The Quantum League: Spell Robbers is a sure-fire hit for boys and girls who like heroic adventure. Part superheroes, part spy book, part sci-fi/fantasy, give this to kids who like Artemis Fowl or Spy School.
