Gripping

Most detective stories start dispassionately, with the detective intellectually investigating a crime that has already happened to someone else. Not this one!
(Inspector George Felse's wife) Bunty, facing a milestone birthday alone, goes out for a drink, meets, and is kidnapped by a man who may be a murderer. Even if written in the third person, this story is first person all the way (Bunty), from her first attempts to escape, to her growing insights into the man's character, to her unraveling of the crime, to the final resolution.
In the Felse books, we hear often than Bunty is formidably intelligent, and insightful, and here she comes into her own. With her unique voice and a gripping plot, this may be the best in the entire series.

I can't believe I'm the first to review this book!

This is a wonderful story in the George Felse series, although we see very little of George this go round and a great deal of his marvelous wife, Bunty. In this one Bunty is on her own while George is in London following a lead. While she is being maudlin about her forty-first birthday, she gets thrown into the adventure of her life. She meets a distraught stranger in a pub on Saturday night, and she finds herself caught up in a truly terrifying situation. The action of the book only takes place over 24 hours, but there is enough action jam-packed in that 24 hours to keep the reader turning pages. We're talking about murder, kidnapping, organized crime and a whole slew of lesser things. And Bunty slides through it all in her usual inimitable fashion. Of course the writing is pure Ellis Peters, and the book is a delight!

Bunty Felse takes center stage

Her forty-first birthday ambushes Bunty Felse with an attack of depression, a most unfamiliar state for that normally happy and sensible woman. The weather is dreary, her only child (son Dominic) fails to call or write home with birthday greetings, and her husband, George - for whom she gave up dreams of a musical career (one for which she really did have the necessary talent) - arrives home only to announce he's on his way to London for a few days. After almost 20 years as a policeman's wife, Bunty doesn't even consider making him feel guilty or trying to get him to stay at home with her. She sends him off with a swiftly packed case, a cup of tea, and a kiss, and then she goes for a long and solitary evening walk. She winds up in the bar at roadhouse, and she accepts a ride home from a morose young man whose sadness draws her out of her own troubles and makes her want to help him. Which she thinks she is doing, secure in her status as his elder by a dozen or so years and certain that she can take care of herself...until she finds out why this young man is so sure his life is over. The reason may mean that Bunty's life is over, too.
Bunty has until now served as an interesting and useful supporting character in the Felse series, as wife to George and mother to Dominic, so I found it a treat to read a book in which she's the central character. The viewpoint shifts back and forth between Bunty and the young man who may or may not have to kill her to keep his terrible secret, and that storytelling strategy works very well indeed. The device is an old one, the woman who feels as if she's waking up to find herself on the verge of middle age, who therefore jumps at a chance to prove to herself (and maybe to others, too) that she's still young, still filled with potential, still capable of having dreams and fulfilling them; but Bunty Felse's solution to that birthday crisis isn't one I'd recommend to other women. It is, though, both realistic (author Pargeter/Peters understands Bunty's dilemma very well) and highly entertaining. Delightful!
