An excellent read for scientists

Pijush Kundu's textbook has established itself as the standard in introductory fluid mechanics. While most fluid dynamics texts are based around engineering, this book is an excellent cross section for scientists hoping to gain a thorough intuition about the subject. In addition, the first few chapters offer intuitive explanations of such vector operators as div and curl. The idea of curl was a complete mystery to me until I read Kundu's explanation of vorticity. This book is a must have for any applied scientist working in the physical world.

Very good textbook !

As a master in mechanical engineer, and working with technical education, I had studied most of the more popular textbooks on fluid mechanics before, and get used not to expect many from "new" textbooks on the subject.
Although, when I came across this book, it was a little surprise. The text is very well written, and includes many advanced and interesting topics not found in other popular textbooks. It gives emphasis to qualitative explanation, and does not overwhelm you with lots of mathematics. The approach to subjects is very clever, insightful and meaningful.
I dare to say it renewed my pleasure in reading, studying and teaching fluid mechanics. Thanks and congratulations to Professor Kundu.

Best Fluid Mech Book Ever

You have to know:
1- This is not an undergrad level book, so if you it is your fist exposure to the subject maybe you need another book (White, Streeter, Shames,...).
2- This is not a Mathematical Fluid Mech. book but, for sure it would be a very great resource for Math student. If you need more mathematical treatment of the subject you may use (Chorin and Marsden, Childress, Elementary Fluid Dynamics by Acheson, L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz, Meyer Richard E...).
3- It covers all the general topics in Fluid Mech up to a good introductory level but if you need more details you need to pickup a book on that specific topic.
For example: Boundary layer: H. Schlichting
Turbulence: Pope or P. A. Davidson
Stability: S. Chandrasekhar
Geophysical Fluid Dynamics: Joseph Pedlosky
Viscous flow: White
Wave Mechanics: Dean and Dalrymple or Chiang C. Mei

4- It flows well, the book is excellent, it almost covers the same level as incompressible flow by Panton or Batchlor's book but it is readable, almost error free, and very well written. It is the absolute best if you need a book for self study.

More of a bible than the Bible...

Look at all the correspondences for Netzach, including colors, scents, and goddesses, and then use your imagination and decorate and prepare your altar! (That might be a rather physical form of love, though. Want love on a higher plane? Then try the correspondences for path 14. It will be more nurturing and loving, untainted by the corruption of Netzach.)

There is also a lot on Gematria which can be useful for some magicians, I suppose. To be truthful, I feel Gematria is somewhat overrated in modern magick, due in part to Crowley. Certainly it has its place, but I've seen too many magicians put way too much credence in the way numbers add up to the point they become silly numerologists. Either way though, here is a good place to start for making your own Gematric encyclopedia.

MYSTERIUM TREMENDUM ET FASCINANS

Greek Gems and Finger Rings is not a book about jewelry, merely; it's about history, archeology, art, and the origins of Western civilization. John Boardman makes a great case for why anyone interested in the ancient Greeks, and particularly their fine arts, should take a careful look at their gems and finger rings. Many if not most of the "gems" and "rings" discussed (and pictured in exquisite detail in the book) are actually seals used by the ancient Greeks (and Minoans) for various purposes: to seal and mark private personal correspondence and documents of state, to seal and identify containers and their goods in commerce. They were also used as heraldry. And yes, sometimes they were just jewelry. In Bronze Age Greece, these seals went from crude glyphs to gorgeous works of art in ivory, gold, precious stones. Some depict religious rituals and gods, scenes from mythology. Or they can depict hunting scenes with people and animals. Boardman takes you chronologically from Minoan/Mycenean to Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic. He places the gems in cultural and historical context. He obviously has extensive knowledge of the prior literature on the subject, especially the archeological record and matters of provenance. Many of the gems in this book are artistic masterpieces to rival those of any Greek art. Boardman makes a case for them as miniature sculpture. To me they are more interesting than early Greek vase painting, which appears more frequently in books about ancient Greece than these seals, which are rarely shown. What particularly fascinated me was the clear differences in techniques, tastes, and styles from period to period. Comparing, say, the early Minoan and Mycenean seals to those of the Classical period yields some continuities, of course, but also much that is different, even in the way they portray the human (and also non-human) body. For example, the Minoans depicted people as wasp-waisted, with arm and leg joints very tapered, a total contrast to the Classical depictions, which are more realistic even within their idealizations. The Minoan bodies look more flexible, and their style captures a vibrant sense of animation, movement, life. The Classical gems are beautiful, but I found the Minoan gems more interesting. They are certainly more ecstatically alive. I might wonder to what extent the classical Greeks really believed in their gods, but in the case of the Minoan seals I must say they really convey a sense of pagan worship, showing rituals involving bare-chested women holding serpents, little gods materializing above altars. The Minoans and Myceneans are farther back in time than the Classical Greeks, and their art conveys that primordiality, a spirit and attitude towards existence that appear strange to us today as compared with the seals created in subsequent periods. We recognize the classical; its influence is all around us. But the Minoans seem alien, even in the way they dress. The book itself is large, sumptuous, and brimming with over a thousand detailed impressions and photographs. Well worth the price.

Bargain Price on a Beautiful Book

Boardman's book is great for looking at Bronze Age, early and classical Greek Gems, but only spends a few pages on Hellenistic Gems and lumps them together with Roman, which was a bit disappointing. Other than that, a beautiful book, almost a complete corpus of gems from the noted period. Very useful.

Simple and Insightful Book for Overeaters/Binge-Eaters--and if you want to Kindle it, see DITCHING DIETS

Your brain is the key. Your choice is essential. Habits can be changed.

Any person trying to lose weight, especially those of us from a frenzied/over-/binge-eating status, knows the brain is where the battle really is. Willpower. We choose. We are not defenseless in the face of temptation. We can learn to fight the primitive drives.

I bought this paperback a year ago--but I had bought EATING LESS in 2010-- but if you prefer to e-read it, you should know it's available as a Kindle book in the updated version retitled DITCHING DIETS. (Just learned that reading the newsletter today.)

I've lost 115 pounds and my journey required I learn a lot about what drove me and what occasionally still wants to drive me to food. Gillian's works have helped me have a better understanding and mindset. I have not binged since May 2010, and I subscribe to Gillian's newsletter (you can too, just go to her website at Eating less dot come). Lots of resources have helped and are helping me in this journey. This was one.

TRULY EXCELLENT INFORMATION FOR OVEREATERS

This book is completely different from any other book I've ever read on the subject of controlling eating - and I've read them all! I say this because no matter what dietary advice you want to follow, this method applies. I highly recommend this book if you want to follow any diet, but this book can stand very well on its own.
I'm completely impressed with this whole book and how it's been written, the way the material has been presented, especially the chapter about the brain. Gillian Riley doesn't just make statements and then move on, each statement is explained thoroughly and totally backed up, so that it's perfectly clear, just in case somebody reading it isn't sure.
I already knew maybe one thing contained in the chapter on the brain, but there was a lot of new information in there that was very helpful because it explains the dynamics of how things are actually working, gives you such an understanding of what's really going on. So it's like, if someone was afraid of flying it might help them to understand something about how a plane actually works.
I could really connect to the description of what happens in the more primitive part of the brain and when I have those feelings of being driven to overeat that come from that part of the brain. It really does make sense to me, it explains very well how I feel, because it does feel quite primitive when I'm wanting to eat from that kind of place, as if it's a survival drive.
I believe that food addiction is 99 per cent, if not 100 per cent, in the brain, and Beating Overeating deals way more with that than any other book. So it can make you understand and give you tools to use for whatever nutrition advice you want to follow. The other books tell you what foods to eat, but this book is almost like a completely different subject. I highly recommend it. I promise you'll enjoy the new ideas.
